Sydney weather is hard on timber. Sills rot from the bottom, posts fail at the ground line, decks cup and split. We cut back to sound material, match what was there, and deal with the cause so it does not come back.
Find the water first
Timber does not rot on its own. Water gets in and then stays in. Replacing a rotted sill without working out how the water arrived buys you a repair with an expiry date on it.
So we look for the source first: failed flashing, a blocked weep hole, ground level built up against the frame, a joint that was never sealed properly. Then we repair, and we tell you what needs to change if you want it to last. The usual work is window and door sills, veranda and pergola posts, bearers and joists, deck boards and substructure, fascia and barge boards, stair treads and stringers, and structural splices where a member is sound apart from one end.
Matching is most of the craft
A repair that obviously looks like a repair is only half finished. Profiles for federation and inter-war joinery can still be run, species can be matched, and a scarf joint cut properly disappears once it is finished.
It takes longer than replacement and it is very often cheaper. On a period building it is also the difference between maintaining the place and slowly wrecking it.
