Framing is the last cheap opportunity to fix the geometry of a building. We build square, plumb and to the drawings, so the trades behind us are installing rather than adjusting.
Square now, or paid for later
Every millimetre out of square in a frame gets paid for more than once: by the plasterer packing it out, by the joiner scribing to it, and by whoever ends up looking at the result. Framing is quick work, which is exactly the reason it attracts shortcuts. We check diagonals, plumb and level as we go rather than at the end, when fixing it costs real money.
That covers wall framing, floor systems, bearers and joists, roof framing and truss installation, structural posts and beams, and the blocking and noggings later trades need for their fixings. Where engineered timber, steel connections or tie-downs are specified, they go in as specified rather than as substituted.
Tie-downs and connections
Bracing and tie-down is the part of a frame nobody sees and a certifier will definitely look for. Straps, brackets, bolts and hold-downs go in to the specified schedule, and we will not let linings go on over a connection that does not match it.
It is the part of a frame that is quick to skip and expensive to correct once the walls are closed up, which is exactly why it gets checked as it goes rather than at the end.
